If it’s not yes, it’s no
This hits home. A few weeks ago, I was intimate with someone. We were on my bed and I had actively taken both mine and her clothes off. However, when it came down to it, and as she was about to go down, she stopped to ask me if I was okay with continuing.
This is the exchange that followed:
Me: Do you not want to?
Her: Of course I want to… I’m asking if you want to.
Me: ….I… don’t know.
She immediately climbed up to meet my eyes with hers and just held me. I really really really appreciated it.
Moral of the story: Just because someone is an active participant, doesn’t mean they can’t retract their consent at any point. As well, I don’t know or I’m not sure means no.
